The short version

What you are buying

I am not a fitness account that also likes gadgets. I am a systems designer who applies the same discipline to the body that I apply to software — mechanics first, measurable, and explainable. That is what my audience comes for, and it is why what I say about a product carries weight.

Why work with me

  • A defined, unusual angle — the mechanics underneath training, not another highlight reel.
  • Long-form credibility: a full-length book on grappling mechanics, in final revision.
  • Production is handled. Photography, writing and editing are in-house.
  • Honest reviews only. I will say what did not work, which is why the positive parts land.
  • Reliable to work with: briefs read, deadlines met, usage rights agreed up front.

What you can book

Long-form product testing

I use the product for a real training block and publish what actually happened — including the parts that did not work. Delivered as a written review plus supporting stills.

Social content

Feed posts, reels and stories shot to your brief or mine. Training, technique breakdowns, and gear in genuine use rather than staged unboxings.

Apparel and equipment

Worn and shot in training and competition contexts, in the environments the product is actually built for.

Ambassador retainers

Ongoing representation with an agreed content cadence. Available to a small number of brands so the endorsement stays worth something.

Appearances and events

Seminars, launches, shoots and demonstrations.

Rates depend on scope, exclusivity and usage term. Send the brief and you will get a straight number back.

25 words

Andrew Valentine builds systems for living, tools for thinking, and worlds for play — Homeostasis, Longbarrow, and The Grammar of Grappling.

75 words

Andrew Valentine is a systems designer and writer in Virginia Beach. He is building Homeostasis, a personal operating system that turns ambitions into executable days; Longbarrow, a browser-native strategy world with no dice rolls in its combat; and The Grammar of Grappling, a book about the mechanics underneath technique. He manages a bar, trains, and spends most of his attention on the rules that quietly govern a day, a body, or a battlefield.

200 words

I am interested in the hidden systems underneath things — the rules that govern a day, a body, a business, a decision, or a battlefield. Most of what I build is an attempt to make one of those systems clearer, more beautiful, and more responsive to what a person actually intends. I manage a bar in Virginia Beach, which is where a lot of my ideas get stress-tested. A venue at capacity is a live exercise in constraint and sequencing: inventory, staffing, throughput, and the gap between a plan and what is actually happening at one in the morning. Before that I sold cars and remodeling, and cooked on a line. Most operational problems turn out to be design problems wearing a costume. Homeostasis came out of frustration with software that can list your tasks but cannot tell you which one matters or why. Longbarrow came out of frustration with strategy games where a coin flip overrules a better decision. The Grammar of Grappling came out of watching beginners drown in technique lists when what they needed was the mechanics underneath. Different subjects, same complaint. Otherwise: I train, I read more strategy and history than is strictly reasonable, I take photographs, and I am slowly working toward a boat that can cross an ocean.

Software

Homeostasis

Homeostasis is a scheduling and forecasting system that understands why a task matters, what it depends on, and what it unlocks — then tells you what to do next and shows you the cost of not doing it.

Game & engine

Longbarrow

Longbarrow is a real-time strategy game and engine running in the browser, where no die is rolled in combat. Outcomes come from position, timing, terrain and preparation — a better decision is never overruled by chance.

Books

The Grammar of Grappling

The Grammar of Grappling is a mechanics-first guide to understanding submission grappling as a coherent system rather than a collection of moves to memorise.

Interview topics

  • Why deterministic combat makes strategy games better, not more rigid
  • Designing software that can explain its own decisions
  • The finite mechanics underneath grappling's infinite techniques
  • Running a bar as an exercise in systems design
  • Sequencing ambition: why the ordering matters more than the effort
